How to Choose the Right Shirts for a Meaningful T-Shirt Memory Quilt

How to Choose the Right Shirts for a Meaningful T-Shirt Memory Quilt

When you think back through your life, what are the memories that really stick out? What are the moments, events, celebrations or anything else that have left a tremendous impact on you? Many of these memories may be huge achievements and milestones, and many of them may seem quite mundane to anyone else. Or, your most impactful memories could be something very imperfect and messy. All of these memories shape who we are, so how can we celebrate them?

Well, today we’re here to answer just that, and the key to savoring these memories forever might just lie in our favorite t-shirts and clothing items. Our shirts have been with us through all of these moments of life––some of them are sure to have logos specifically explaining what events they signify––and letting your favorite shirts sit in a closet, basement or attic for as long as you keep them is doing a disservice to those memories. So, instead, we’re looking at the power of transforming your favorite shirts into a memory quilt and how to choose the perfect shirts to preserve on such a keystone keepsake.

START WITH SHIRTS THAT MEAN SOMETHING

Of course, here at MemoryStitch we’re focused on the memories your shirts capture first and foremost. Your quilt is going to mean so much more to you if you have a strong emotional attachment to the shirts and the memories each shirt carries. Here are just a few memories to keep in mind as you start to go through your shirts:

Milestone Moments

Graduations, competitions, ceremonies, conferences and other such huge landmark events don’t come around all the time. If a massive event has altered the course of your life or signified a transition from one period of your life into another, it deserves to be honored on your t-shirt quilt. And again, even if an event may seem small to someone else, what matters most is what that event means to you.

Everyday Favorite Shirts

Encourage yourself to think outside the box and traditional memory-associated t-shirts. Shirts that have been staples of your wardrobe for years carry potentially even more weight than a shirt that signifies only a single day. Creating a quilt with your everyday favorites will dive you deeper into reflecting on what your favorite interests are and why they mean so much.

Travel and Concert Tees

Vacations and concerts are where we get to open ourselves up to new experiences and often see brand new cultures and art. All of these moments are “smaller” but still have huge impact on our perceptions of the world around us.

Sports and Hobby Apparel

Finally, the sports we play/support and hobbies we take part in show who we are outside of our work or any “standard” life events. Your hobbies and favorite sports are personal, and without showing off what we’re most passionate about to the people around us, life would be quite boring.

HOW MANY SHIRTS DO YOU NEED FOR A T-SHIRT QUILT?

T-shirt quilts are not one-size-fits-all! There’s a huge variety to the amount of shirts the quilts in our collection can display, so here’s a quick run-down:

Small Quilt Sizes

Our kids t-shirt quilts and onesie quilts are our smallest quilts, and each start at 24 panels. In addition, our standard and premium t-shirts come in smaller Lap or Twin sizes, using 16 and 24 shirts respectively.

Medium Quilt Sizes

For a more middle-of-the-road size of quilt, our standard or premium Full-size quilts use 30 t-shirts––perfect for living room blankets. And, if you want to kick things up a notch, our Fuzz Monsta quilt has a 12-shirt variation that offers a similar size with even more comfort.

Large Quilt Sizes

And now for those huge t-shirt collections, our Queen or King-sized quilts use 49 and 64 shirts respectively so you can really clean out that closet. And if that’s not enough, our double-sided quilts use double the shirts for any size option––up to 128 shirts!

BEST TYPES OF CLOTHING FOR MEMORY QUILTS

Of course, the best types of clothes for your memory quilt are the ones that mean the most to you. Although, on a practical level, most standard t-shirts and tops can easily be transformed into a memory quilt. This includes fabrics such as cotton, fleece, flannel, polyester, moisture-wicking material and sweatshirt material. Clothes to watch out for are leather, lace, crochet or shredded materials as they can’t be sewn into the quilt.

Styles of shirts can vary widely too! Send in your work polos, button-downs, quarter-zips, sport jerseys, hospital scrubs, tank-tops and V-necks and we’ll sort out the rest. Keep in mind that if any additional material is necessary, such as for tank-tops or shirts with zippers, there may be a small additional fee. But be creative and make fun choices with the shirts you want to include!

CREATIVE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR QUILT

After deciding the perfect shirts for your quilt, it’s time to decide on organizing the perfect layout. As a collage of memories from your life, the designs of your shirts can be organized in many fun ways. For starters, you could organize the shirts in timeline of events, starting with some of your oldest memories in the top corner and then everything else following chronologically to something quite recent at the bottom. In a similar fashion, you could organize in columns of the friends or family members you shared each memory with. Another option is to group into quadrants or rows of hobbies and different interests––show how multi-faceted of a person you are! Finally, for those aesthetically inclined, creating a flow of colors of shirts and designs will always make your quilt pleasant to look at and a work of art in and of itself.

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR QUILT EVEN MORE MEANINGFUL

Beyond everything we’ve discussed today, there are so many more ways to show off the meaning of your shirts. Create a tapestry of your devotion to your family and friends by including shirts from those who matter most to you. Choose one specific theme and really explore how the clothes you wear relate to your career, your hobbies or your other passions. Explore using both the front and backs of shirts––this really leans into upcycling and reusing as much fabric as possible! Or, consider creating a collection of keepsakes with companion t-shirt pillows as well. The creativity of transforming your clothes into memory keepsakes has no limit beyond your imagination.
